The city of Cameron, North Carolina, is served by four schools enrolling about 2,768 students in grades PK–12: two elementary schools (Cameron Elementary and Johnsonville Elementary), one middle school (New Century Middle), and one high school (Union Pines High). Three of the four belong to Moore County Schools, the stronger district at 63rd of 246 in North Carolina (four stars), while Johnsonville Elementary belongs to Harnett County Schools, ranked 173rd with two stars. Enrollment ranges from 215 at Cameron Elementary to 1,462 at Union Pines High.

New Century Middle is the clear standout, ranking 87th of 778 North Carolina middle schools (89th percentile, four stars). It beat district and state averages on every reported test, including 92.3% proficiency in 8th-grade science, and has Cameron's lowest chronic absenteeism at 13.9%. Johnsonville Elementary is the biggest riser: despite 99.18% of students qualifying for free/reduced lunch, it surged from the 47th to the 71st percentile and now exceeds district and state averages in every subject, with 5th-grade science jumping from 48.2% to 77.0%. Union Pines High remains solid, graduating 91.5% and exceeding state averages in English II, Biology, and Math I, but its Math III proficiency fell below the state average and its ranking slipped from the 70th to the 61st percentile. Cameron Elementary shows the most warning signs, with 29.8% chronic absenteeism and 3rd- and 4th-grade scores below its Moore County Schools district average, despite strong 5th-grade results.

The data also reveals a sharp socioeconomic divide: the two secondary schools report about 32% free/reduced lunch, while the two elementary schools report 98–99%. High poverty does not automatically mean low performance — Johnsonville Elementary, despite belonging to lower-ranked Harnett County Schools, posted higher proficiency than Cameron Elementary of Moore County Schools. Chronic absenteeism at Cameron Elementary is the clearest lever for improvement. In short, Johnsonville Elementary is the most encouraging turnaround, New Century Middle is the model, Union Pines High is solid but worth monitoring in math, and Cameron Elementary needs the most attention.
