Mountain View Elementary is a PK–6 school in Jefferson, NC, serving 566 students in the rural, high-poverty mountains of northwest North Carolina as part of Ashe County Schools. The school has been a consistent 4-star performer for years, but recent data show a noticeable decline: Mountain View fell from the 82nd percentile statewide in 2022–23 to the 58th percentile in 2025–26, and now holds a 3-star rating. That drop matters for parents, but it doesn't tell the whole story — the school still has real strengths worth noting.

Attendance is one clear bright spot. Only 10.3% of students were chronically absent in 2024–25, far better than the state rate of 24.2% and the district rate of 13.7%. That's a remarkable turnaround from 37.2% just a few years earlier. Academically, 5th-grade science is a standout at 76.3% proficiency, above both district and state averages, and 6th graders are performing well in reading and math. The weaker spots are reading in grades 3 through 5, where proficiency runs below district and state averages — for example, only about half of 5th graders are proficient in reading.
