Summary

Ashe County Middle in Warrensville, NC, is a rural public school serving 401 students in grades 7–8 as part of Ashe County Schools, which ranks in the top fifth of North Carolina districts. The school currently earns 4 out of 5 stars on SchoolDigger and ranks 171st out of 778 middle schools statewide, placing it in the 78th percentile — a strong position, though a modest step down from its 84th-percentile ranking in 2024–25. Ashe County Middle beats state proficiency averages in every tested subject. In 2025–26, 76.5% of 7th graders were proficient in math versus 56.2% statewide, and 75.8% of 8th graders were proficient in science versus 68.6% statewide.

These results are especially impressive given that over 99% of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. The school is particularly effective at serving its highest-need students: homeless students ranked 1st out of 59 schools statewide in 2025–26, gifted students ranked 3rd out of 465, and low-income students ranked in the 86th percentile. Chronic absenteeism has fallen sharply, from 41.2% in 2021–22 to 16.8% in 2024–25, now below the state average of 24.2%. The student-to-teacher ratio of about 12:1 is healthy and likely supports the individualized attention these students receive.

Reading is the school's relative weakness — 60.4% of 8th graders were proficient versus 56.1% statewide — and outcomes for English learners and special education students lag behind the school's overall profile. The only nearby comparison, Watauga Virtual Academy in Boone, is a fundamentally different virtual program with just 10 students in grades 6–8. Still, the contrasts are clear: Ashe County Middle ranks in the 78th percentile academically versus Watauga Virtual Academy's 56th, and its chronic absenteeism rate of 16.8% is dramatically lower than the virtual academy's 50.0%. On every comparable metric, Ashe County Middle's attendance and academics are superior.

Open Quote The basketball program is awesome. This has been the best 9 months of my life. There are some great language arts teachers but they are lacking Science teachers. I have improved in everything but Science. I have been able to look around that because I think they had the best basketball coach in North Carolina. Close Quote
