Ashe County Schools

Ashe County Schools serves 2,676 students across six schools in rural North Carolina: three elementary schools (Blue Ridge Elementary, Mountain View Elementary, and Westwood Elementary), one middle school (Ashe County Middle), and two high schools (Ashe County High and Ashe County Early College High). Despite every school reporting that more than 97% of students qualify for free/reduced lunch, the district ranks 48th of 246 North Carolina districts with a 4-star rating, and several schools post results well above state averages.

Blue Ridge Elementary is the district's clearest improvement story. It climbed from the 54th percentile in 2023-24 to the 73rd percentile in 2025-26, moved from 3 to 4 stars, and now tops the district's elementary schools in average math and reading proficiency, with 5th grade science at 78.9%. Westwood Elementary and Mountain View Elementary, meanwhile, have both slipped in statewide rank, though they remain competitive in many subjects. Ashe County Middle has held a 4-star rating for three straight years and is the district's most consistent traditional school; its 7th and 8th grade math scores run about 18–20 points above state averages.

The district's two high schools could hardly be more different. Ashe County Early College High ranks in the 86th percentile statewide and posts math proficiency above 90%, an extraordinary result. Ashe County High improved sharply this year — jumping from the 43rd to 56th percentile after its Biology proficiency nearly doubled — yet it still trails district averages in every End-of-Course subject. Chronic absenteeism is below the state average at every school in the district, but it follows a familiar pattern: lower at the elementary schools and highest at Ashe County High at 19%. Overall, math is a consistent strength across the district, and Blue Ridge Elementary's rapid rise is a promising sign for families.
