Summary

Canton Elementary School serves 411 students in grades PK–5 in Canton, Mississippi, within the Canton Public Schools district, a high-poverty community where every student qualifies for free or reduced-price lunch. The school has staged one of the most dramatic turnarounds in the state: in 2015-16 it ranked in the bottom 3% of Mississippi elementary schools with zero stars, but by 2025-26 it reached the 60th percentile with a 3-star rating—the largest single-year jump in its history. It now holds the highest state ranking among the district's four elementary campuses, ahead of Reuben B. Myers Arts & Sciences, McNeal Elementary School, and Jimmie M Goodloe Elementary.

Mathematics is the school's clear strength. In 2025-26, 4th grade math proficiency reached 66.7%—far above the district's 44.5% and the state's 51.5%—and 3rd graders also outpaced both district and state averages. Science has been at or above the state average for four consecutive years, with 75.5% of 5th graders proficient in 2025-26. English Language Arts remains the weak spot: proficiency trails the state in every grade, with 3rd grade at 36.8% versus 48.8% statewide. Scores are also volatile from year to year, so families should look at multi-year trends rather than any single test result.

Despite 100% economic disadvantage, chronic absenteeism has fallen from 32.2% in 2020-21 to 21.5% in 2023-24—below the district rate of 26.4%. The contrast with nearby Madison County Schools is striking: Madison Station Elementary serves a far more affluent population (about 14% free/reduced lunch) and posts higher scores, including 87.3% 4th grade math proficiency. Given the poverty context, Canton's math results are remarkable. One caution: the student-teacher ratio has risen from 13.9 to 17.0 over three years, which could strain future progress.
