Summary

Reuben B. Myers Arts & Sciences is a PK–5 elementary school in Canton, MS, serving 378 students in the Canton Public Schools district, where nearly all students (98.94%) come from low-income households. A decade ago, the school sat near the very bottom of Mississippi's elementary rankings, placing in the 6th percentile in 2014-15. Today, it's a solidly mid-range school, sitting at the 47th percentile with a 2-star rating in 2025-26. That upward climb — from 376th to 200th in state rankings — represents real, sustained progress for the school and its students.

That progress is especially visible in two areas. Science is a clear strength: Reuben has beaten the state's 5th-grade science average three years running, posting a 78.8% proficiency rate in 2025-26 that topped every other Canton elementary school, including Jimmie M Goodloe Elementary and Canton Elementary School. Fifth-grade reading is also a bright spot, with scores above both state and district averages. The school has quietly improved attendance too, cutting chronic absenteeism from 25.7% to 17.9% in two years — a rate now better than the district's and the state's.

Math, though, remains the biggest hurdle. Reuben trails the state in every grade tested, and the gap with comparable schools is stark. Canton Elementary, serving a similar high-poverty population, posted math scores dramatically higher — for example, 66.7% of its 4th graders were proficient versus just 39.3% at Reuben. Nearby Madison Crossing Elementary, part of Madison County Schools, also far outpaces Reuben in reading and math, though Reuben's science scores are surprisingly competitive with that school. The key question for Reuben is whether it can bottle the magic of its science and attendance gains and apply it to math — if so, a 3-star rating isn't far off.
