Excelsior Elementary is a K–5 public school in Excelsior, Minnesota, serving about 707 students as part of the Minnetonka Public School District, one of the state's strongest districts (ranked 9th of 458). That is not a one-year spike: it has ranked 19th–24th and stayed at the 97th–98th percentile since 2020–21, up from the 85th–90th percentile range around 2015–16 to 2018–19. All-grade proficiency is 80.4% in math (district 73.1%, state 44.9%), 74.3% in reading (district 73.0%, state 48.6%), and 57.1% in science (district 46.9%, state 25.5%).

Within its own district, Excelsior ranks third among comprehensively ranked peers, behind Scenic Heights Elementary (87.1% math, 78.4% reading, 64.0% science) and Groveland Elementary, which is slightly ahead in math and reading but much lower in science (42.9%). Excelsior also outpaces Deephaven Elementary, Clear Springs Elementary, and Minnewashta Elementary. Compared with nearby schools outside the district — Gatewood Elementary in the Hopkins Public School District, Prairie View Elementary in the Eden Prairie Public School District, and Bluff Creek Elementary and Chanhassen Elementary in the Eastern Carver County Public School district — Excelsior's proficiency rates are substantially higher. Its 12.7 student-teacher ratio is lower than most same-district peers.

A few patterns are worth watching. Fourth grade is the standout, at 86.9% math and 81.0% reading, but 3rd grade reading (65.1%) and 5th grade reading (76.1%) fall slightly below the district, and 5th grade math (70.9%) is only marginally above it. Science, while well above district and state, has dropped from reported highs of 74.02% in 2022–23 and 72.06% in 2023–24 to 55.64% in 2024–25 and 57.1% in 2025–26; the exam changed from MCA-III to MCA-IV over those years, so some of the shift may reflect reporting differences. Students receiving special education services rank at the 98th percentile, and the low-income subgroup reached the 89th percentile in 2022–23 from the 20th percentile in 2018–19.

Excelcior Elementary School is the absolute WORST choice if you have a child enrolling with Special Needs and an IEP. They do not have consistant staff so each year (for the previous 3 years now) they’ve had a different staff as the Special Education Teacher. They are also very judgemental and the health office is not able to give a disabled child any help. Furthermore the entire parking lot is a complete disaster so when one picks up &/or drops off a child with special needs at the correct door they are either stuck in a parking spot bc of the lanes of other parents who won’t move/stop in order for you to leave or you are literally stuck parking elsewhere due to the minimal amount of parking spaces. There is only 1 Handicapped spot by main door and that spot is still too far of a distance for a child that may have a harder time physically to even reach their schools ebtrance. The communication or lack there of is really an unfortunate negative aspect of this particular school. It was a sadly horrible experience for both my child & myself to go through & I wouldn’t recommend this school to any parent. Close Quote
