Summary

Deephaven Elementary is a K–5 school serving 681 students in the Minnetonka Public School District; it has a Wayzata mailing address (4452 Vine Hill Rd) but sits inside the Minnetonka district boundary, so its real peer group is the Minnetonka elementary cluster. For 2025–26 it ranks 94th of 869 Minnesota elementary schools (89th percentile, 4 stars) — strong, but its lowest rating since 2017–18 and last among the five ranked Minnetonka elementaries.

Yet the school now trails its own district in all three, and reading is the clearest soft spot — 8.6 points below the district and below every other ranked Minnetonka school. Demographics don't explain it: Gleason Lake Elementary in Wayzata has higher poverty (18.87% vs 15.27%) and posts 82.3% math and 76.8% reading, while Prairie View Elementary (34.08% low-income) and Chanhassen Elementary (18.57%) match Deephaven's reading. Science has dropped 27 points in three years, though its current 43.6% is mid-pack locally — above Clear Springs Elementary (39.9) and Groveland Elementary (42.9). Meanwhile Scenic Heights Elementary climbed to 8th statewide, and Clear Springs leapfrogged Deephaven, which ranked ahead of it only two years ago.

The sharpest internal signal is 3rd-grade reading at 53.2% — the lowest among district peers — against 5th-grade reading of 77.8%, a 24.6-point spread even though those same 3rd graders score 75.2% in math. That looks cohort-specific and addressable rather than systemic. Subgroup effectiveness for special education students fell from the 97th to the 68th percentile, and for low-income students from the 77th to about the 60th, while the low-income share rose from 11.09% to 15.27% — the highest of the five ranked Minnetonka elementaries. Bottom line: a genuinely strong school with real momentum concerns, and the priorities are 3rd-grade reading plus the low-income and special-education trends.

We recently moved to Deephaven from Chicago where our children attended a private school. We have been amazed at the level of math and reading the kids are doing here in Deephaven. Even for the kids who aren't "accelerated", it's amazing to see the things that they are challenged to do. The teachers are terrific and are instructing the kids to learn in new and inventive ways.
