Summary

Gatewood Elementary is a public elementary school in Minnetonka, Minnesota, serving 399 students in grades PK-5. The school is part of the Hopkins Public School District, which is ranked 223 out of 446 districts in the state.

Gatewood Elementary has consistently ranked in the bottom half of Minnesota elementary schools over the past five years, with academic performance significantly below the state and district averages. In 2024-2025, only 18.25% of Gatewood students were proficient or better in Math, compared to 45.21% statewide and 38% for the Hopkins district. Reading proficiency rates are also low, with only 28.99% of students proficient or better, compared to 49.59% statewide and 48.66% for the district. The school's performance is particularly poor for Hispanic, White, and English Language Learner students.

Gatewood's challenges stand in stark contrast to the high-performing nearby schools in the Eden Prairie and Minnetonka districts, such as Scenic Heights Elementary, Clear Springs Elementary, and Prairie View Elementary, which all rank in the top 10-20% of Minnesota elementary schools. The high percentage of students from low-socioeconomic backgrounds at Gatewood, 57.64% in 2023-2024, may be a contributing factor to the school's academic struggles.

Open Quote I'm really disappointed in this school. My child has been harrased assaulted and tormented and they do nothing. Every morning I get my child ready to go to school she is terrified. Alot of the little boys put their hands on her and they do nothing. I would hate to have to do this but the parents don't reprimand their children and the bullies even do it in front of the teachers. It's sad to say if nothing is done I will have to press charged against these future criminals, maybe the police department can reprimand them. Close Quote

Open Quote My children all went through Gatewood and had amazing experiences. The teachers and other staff are all amazing. They care about children. Class sizes are great and the academics are on par with neighboring schools and districts. Gatewood offers a great diverse, family focused environment. Students leave the school ready for junior high. Close Quote

Open Quote We love Gatewood. We live in an area that has bussing to both EP and Minnetonka schools, and we chose the Hopkins School District because of its excellence in so many areas. Amazing teachers, diversity that reflects Minnesota, and fantastic families. My two children could not be more happy with their school. Close Quote
