Summary

Piney Point Elementary is a mid-sized elementary school serving 435 students in grades PK-5 in the rural community of Tall Timbers, Maryland, and is part of St. Mary's County Public Schools, a district ranked 7th in the state.

This school stands out as a true "math powerhouse" in the area. For the 2025-2026 school year, 42% of students were proficient in math, significantly outpacing the district average of 36% and the state average of 27.1%. This is not a one-year fluke; Piney Point has outperformed the district in math every year for the past five years, often by a margin of 10-15 percentage points. This is a stark contrast to nearby schools like Ridge Elementary, Park Hall Elementary, and Greenview Knolls Elementary, which all fall below the district average in math. However, the school's English Language Arts (ELA) performance is a relative weakness, with 56.8% proficiency compared to the district's 58.5%, creating a notable "ELA gap" compared to its own math scores. This is the opposite of the trend seen at many other schools like Leonardtown Elementary and Evergreen Elementary School, where ELA is the stronger subject.

Piney Point has also made remarkable progress in reducing chronic absenteeism, which has plummeted from a high of 32.3% in 2021-2022 to just 19.6% in 2024-2025—a dramatic improvement of nearly 13 percentage points. This rate is now significantly better than the district average (27.3%) and is the lowest among comparable nearby schools, tied with Chesapeake Charter School. With a moderate student-teacher ratio of 16.3 and per-student spending of $17,394, Piney Point achieves its strong math results without the smaller class sizes or higher spending seen at some other schools, making it a reliable, high-value option for families seeking a solid education, especially for students who may need extra support in reading.

Open Quote My son has been enrolled at Piney Point Elementary for 3 years (now in 2nd grade 2012-2013) and I cannot say enough good things about our school. Everyone from the Administrator, Mrs. Ellis, to the office staff to the teachers and support staff goes above and beyond to make PPES the best school for the student body AND for the parents/family members! The curriculum is outstanding and so are the family members that volunteer! This is a very family friendly environment with high test scores and bright dispositions to make each student feel intelligent, valued, safe and loved.
It is with a very sad heart that this will be our last year here at PPES as my husband has been relocated back to Norfolk, VA.
I wish we could pack up the school and take it with us! OR better yet...not have to leave. This has been a very rewarding experience for my son and our family!
I hope that if you are considering moving to this school district that you find and create many happy memories and I know for certain that your child and your family will make many fantastic memories. GO BEACONS! LET YOUR LIGHT SHINE! Close Quote
