Summary

Evergreen Elementary School in California, MD, is a high-performing school within the St. Mary's County Public Schools district, serving 715 students from Pre-Kindergarten through 5th grade and consistently ranking in the top 20% of Maryland elementary schools.

Evergreen stands out for its exceptional academic performance, with proficiency rates in Math (58.8%) and English Language Arts (65.4%) that are dramatically higher than both district and state averages. The school is particularly strong in mathematics, especially in upper grades—5th graders achieve a 65.7% proficiency rate compared to just 37.3% district-wide. What makes this even more impressive is that Evergreen achieves these results while spending only $14,965 per student, the lowest amount among nearby schools. For context, Green Holly Elementary School spends over $25,000 per student but achieves proficiency rates that are 30-40 percentage points lower. Evergreen also has a lower chronic absenteeism rate (20.6%) compared to the district average (27.3%) and nearby schools like George Washington Carver Elementary (32.8%).

Evergreen is part of a cluster of high-performing schools in northern St. Mary's County, including Captain Walter Francis Duke Elementary and Hollywood Elementary, all of which share a similar demographic profile. However, Evergreen has a unique strength: it ranks in the 99th percentile statewide for Hispanic student performance, an extraordinary achievement that suggests highly effective support systems. While the school performs well overall, families should note that Chesapeake Charter School, located just 5.46 miles away, offers a strong alternative with slightly higher ELA proficiency (69.7% vs. 65.4%) and a more diverse student body.

Open Quote I would give a 0 Star if I could. On top of being an unpleasant and snobbish environment for my child, they make false reports to DHS. He's often made complaints about how rude the teachers have been especially when he's needed help with certain subjects. He has told me his teacher has yelled at him out of frustration when he was stuck on a tough subject in class. I have also stayed in contact with them via email during this pandemic, yet they decided to make a false report saying we haven't been doing anything to further his education at all! I am grateful I have the emails as proof. They treat people of color horribly at this school because I haven't heard anything like this from the other parents. Close Quote
