Summary

Duval High in Lanham, MD, is a large public high school serving 2,522 students in grades 9-12 as part of the Prince George's County Public Schools district, where nearly all students (95.92%) come from low-income households. While the school has faced significant challenges, it shows a notable strength in English Language Arts (ELA), with 40.3% of students proficient—a rate that actually surpasses the district average and outpaces nearby schools like High Point High (31.8%) and Fairmont Heights High (30.2%). However, math proficiency is a critical weakness, with only 10.9% of students meeting standards, well below the state average of 27.1%, and just 6.4% proficient in Geometry.

Duval's graduation rate of 76.3% is competitive within the area, exceeding rates at Northwestern High (68.8%) and Bladensburg High (68.3%), and its dropout rate of 15.1% is actually below the district average. Chronic absenteeism remains a major issue at 38.5%, though this is lower than several peers like High Point (49.2%) and Fairmont Heights (46.3%). The school's performance has been volatile, with a state ranking that peaked at the 53rd percentile in 2021-2022 before dropping sharply, likely influenced by a recent surge in economic disadvantage.

A striking comparison is with Eleanor Roosevelt High, located just 1.76 miles away, which boasts a 66.3% ELA proficiency rate, an 88.7% graduation rate, and a 23.8% chronic absenteeism rate—all significantly better than Duval's. The key difference appears to be the level of economic disadvantage, with Duval's free/reduced lunch rate (95.9%) far exceeding Eleanor Roosevelt's (62.9%). Despite higher per-student spending ($16,478) than some higher-performing schools, Duval's outcomes highlight how socioeconomic factors deeply influence school performance, even within the same small geographic area.

Open Quote Despite some of the negative rumors regarding Duval High, I am pleased with my son's progress and morale. The teachers are very responsive and dedicated, if you and your child are serious about getting an education the teachers will make sure your child gets the instruction he/she needs. I think the teachers can get overwhelmed by the class size in the beginning but once you meet with them and communicate with them regularly it seems that the issues seem to go away. That's just my experience. I believe that the curriculum could be a bit more challenging but I can't blame that on Duval that fault belongs to the school system.
