Summary

Thomas Johnson Middle in Lanham, MD, is a public school serving 1,180 students in grades 6-8 within the Prince George's County Public Schools district, where a large majority of students come from low-income households.

This school stands out for two very different reasons. First, it has made incredible progress in getting students to class, slashing its chronic absenteeism rate from 36.4% to just 10.5% over the last four years—the lowest rate among nearby schools like Greenbelt Middle (14.5%) and G. James Gholson Middle (42.2%). Second, its advanced math program is a clear strength: 57.9% of students taking Algebra I passed the end-of-course exam, far exceeding the district average of 11.1% and outperforming schools like Hyattsville Middle (42.9%) and Benjamin Tasker Middle (36.7%). However, overall math proficiency remains very low at just 9%, and English Language Arts scores have stayed flat at around 33% proficient, suggesting that while attendance has improved, academic gains for the majority of students have not followed.

Interestingly, a demographically similar school just 2.8 miles away—Kenmoor Middle—significantly outperforms Thomas Johnson in nearly every subject, with overall math proficiency 2.6 times higher and ELA proficiency 1.5 times higher. This comparison suggests that the challenges at Thomas Johnson are not solely due to student poverty, but also point to school-specific factors like instruction and leadership. For parents, this school offers a strong advanced math track and a clear commitment to improving attendance, but it also faces a major challenge in raising achievement for all students.

Open Quote This school is the worst school your children can go to. Teachers sleeping in class, don't even try to communicate with the principal or the teachers, they never return emails. The principal Owens is very unqualified. I truly feel sorry for the students who want to learn. I see why prince George's county ranks almost last in scores. Close Quote

Open Quote I am a student at this school. In my opinion this school at times has its bad times, but it has many great teachers who go above the limits to teach students what they will need in the future. The school doesn't get good test ratings but the year I was in the school (2016-2017) we had very high scores in some classes. If you want your child to go to a school where they would have fun learning, have many projects that will be fun, learn many things in different ways, help the environment become a better place with fundraisers and donating, and also experience something they will never forget, I recommend your child to go to Thomas Johnson Middle School. Open Quote TJMS is the worst middle school any of my kids attended. We moved in a very new and nice area of Bowie only to be in one of the worst school districts in Maryland. Glenn Dale elementary school & faculty was, surprisingly, good. Unfortunately, at TJMS there are a lot bad seeds(6th grade: teachers, assistant principal, etc). There are a few good ones, but not enough for me to give the school a higher score than one star. My child's teachers are very vindictive & I find myself questioning why some of them are still employed. Some of them cuss/yell at or around the students. They are the true bullies in this school. I stopped wasting my time with trying to resolve things with the teachers & assist principal. I deal strictly with the principal.

Anyway, if you've heard anything bad about this school, believe it. It's true! I gave this school a try and had a rude awakening. My daughter is not the same student because of all of their ignorance and unprofessional behaviors. DO NOT SEND YOUR KIDS TO THIS SCHOOL!!! Close Quote
