Summary

College Park Academy is a public charter school in Riverdale, MD, serving 682 students in grades 6-12 within the Prince George's County Public Schools district. This smaller school stands out for its exceptional English Language Arts (ELA) performance, with 60% of students proficient in the 2025-2026 school year—far exceeding the district average of 38.9% and even rivaling the highly-regarded Montgomery Blair High (73% proficiency). The school also boasts remarkably low chronic absenteeism at just 11.5%, compared to the district's 30.2% and Montgomery Blair High's 33.7%, suggesting a strong, engaging school culture.

Academically, College Park Academy excels beyond ELA, with 8th-grade Science proficiency (39.1%) more than double the district average (16.2%) and 8th-grade Social Studies proficiency (63.7%) tripling the district average (20.8%). However, math remains a challenge, with only 19% of all students proficient, though this still outperforms the district average of 13.7%. The school's higher per-student spending of $22,745 (compared to roughly $17,500 at nearby traditional high schools like Eleanor Roosevelt High and Parkdale High) supports smaller class sizes and specialized programs that likely contribute to its success.

Compared to nearby schools, College Park Academy serves a more mixed-income population, with 53.2% of students qualifying for free or reduced lunch—significantly lower than the 95%+ rates at Parkdale High and Bladensburg High. Its ELA proficiency is competitive with Charles Herbert Flowers High (62.5%) and Eleanor Roosevelt High (66.3%), despite being a much smaller school. While recent graduation rate data is unavailable, the school's strong middle and early high school performance suggests it is a high-quality alternative within a district where many larger schools face significant challenges.

Open Quote It can take some time for your child to adjust in sixth grade, however feel confident that your child is learning. I was on the fence at first but this is one of the best public school options in pg. My child loves it Close Quote

Open Quote Our child attended this school for 5 years, from its day one. We see it grow and develop. The school is still in search of a good working model. Many of the expectations we had at the beginning did not come true. If government allowed them selection testing of applicants, the results would have been better. Most importantly, the quality of teachers is very uneven. Some great, some slacking. This is an aspiring project that lacks leadership and transparency. Close Quote

Open Quote Worst experience ever!!! When your child comes home and asks to go to summer school because she doesn't feel prepared for the next grade. HORRIFYING!!!!
Bullying from students and teachers is the worst. Violence, weapons, too friendly of staff. I spent more time at this school fighting for my child to get a peaceful and basic education than I did in her elementary school and I volunteered there 3 times a month! PGCPS needs to either fully support their charter schools or close them down completely. Close Quote

Open Quote If you are okay with your child not receving a lot of support from teachers to try to do their best, this is not the school for you. Close Quote

Open Quote I am the parent of a 6th grader. My child went from a Honor Roll student to failing. Teachers do not communicate with parents or even assist the kids. Administration is very unorganized and honestly seems like favoritism is shown to the children of University of Maryland professors and staff. It has potential to be a good school, but I do not recommend right now. Close Quote

Open Quote .... It's an internet school. Technically not difficult. However, many teachers don't really teach. For some classes, they have substitutes. For some classes, they actually don't have teachers.
Many teachers are not available to talk over students progress.
Honestly, it's a school I strongly do not recommend. Close Quote
