Summary:

Springfield has 34 elementary schools serving roughly 11,859 students, ranging from just 33 students at Springfield Public Day Elementary School to 621 at German Gerena Community School, with a median school size of about 312. All belong to the Springfield district, which ranks 322 of 351 districts statewide — 8th percentile, 0 stars. For comparison, district proficiency is ELA 22.09, math 17.37, and science 20.90, while Massachusetts averages are ELA 40.03, math 41.11, and science 40.98.

Bright spots exist. Alfred G. Zanetti Montessori Magnet School is the only 4-star school, ranking 258 of 899 (71st percentile) and beating state averages in ELA (55.56), math (47.09), and science (46.97). Warner and Frederick Harris earned 3 stars, with Warner posting the highest math score (57.50) in the group. Frank H Freedman and White Street also rank among the strongest for ELA, while Alice B Beal Elementary leads in science (57.14) but lags in reading and math.

Math is the system-wide weakness: only 4 of 33 schools with current data exceed the state math average, versus 5 of 33 in ELA and 7 of 32 in science. Several schools improved markedly, including Samuel Bowles, Sumner Avenue, and Mary M Walsh. Others remain very low-performing, such as Lincoln, Brightwood, and Benjamin Swan Elementary. Very small or specialized schools should be viewed separately rather than compared directly. Free/reduced-lunch data are suppressed for every school, and spending figures are from 2020-2021.
