Summary

Brightwood is an elementary school located in Springfield, MA, serving grades PK-5 with a total enrollment of 480 students. The school has consistently ranked in the bottom 10-15% of Brightwood elementary schools in Massachusetts over the past several years, with a 0-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Academically, Brightwood significantly underperforms compared to the Springfield district and the state of Massachusetts on MCAS Next Generation assessments. In the 2024-2025 school year, only 7.54% of Brightwood students were proficient or better in English Language Arts and Mathematics, compared to 22.11% and 17.12% for the Springfield district, and 41.53% and 40.74% for the state. The school's student subgroups, including Hispanic, English Language Learner, and Special Education students, also struggle academically compared to their peers statewide.

While Brightwood spends significantly more per student ($18,469 in 2020-2021) compared to the state average, this higher spending does not translate to improved academic outcomes. Nearby schools, such as Glenwood, German Gerena Community School, and Edward P. Boland School, also struggle academically but perform significantly better than Brightwood on MCAS assessments. The district should prioritize implementing comprehensive and effective interventions to support student learning and improve educational outcomes at Brightwood.

Open Quote I taught here. The majority of the students are very disrespectful and terribly behaved. Their parents are the main reason, being very disrespectful and undereducated. Some are fine, but far too few. The teaching staff is very good, but it is very difficult to work with the majority of the student population. The principal plays favorites, keeps uncertified teacher/friends on staff, and has driven out good teachers because of personal feelings, not on quality of teaching. Sad. The principal should be replaced. Honestly, they couldn't pay me to send my child to this school. Close Quote
