Summary

Wedgewood Elementary School in Baton Rouge, LA, is a mid-sized elementary school (PK-5) serving 456 students within the East Baton Rouge Parish School District, where over 82% of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. While the school has historically ranked in the bottom 20-30% of elementary schools statewide, recent data shows a significant upward trend, climbing to the 26th percentile in 2026—its highest ranking in several years. This improvement is encouraging, but Wedgewood still faces challenges compared to higher-performing neighbors like Shenandoah Elementary (86th percentile) and Parkview Elementary (72nd percentile), which are consistently strong options within a short distance.

One standout strength is Wedgewood's 3rd-grade math performance, where 59% of students were proficient in 2025-2026—higher than the district average (54%) and nearly matching the state average (62%). However, this success doesn't carry through to later grades, as 4th and 5th grade math scores drop to 48% and 47%, respectively, well below district and state averages. Similarly, in English Language Arts, 5th graders (54% proficient) fall behind the district (71%) and state (73%), creating a "5th grade cliff" that suggests a systemic challenge in preparing students for upper elementary rigor. This pattern isn't seen at top-performing schools like Shenandoah, where 5th graders (94% proficient in ELA) outperform their 3rd-grade peers.

Chronic absenteeism at Wedgewood has declined to 21.0% in 2024-2025, which is better than the district average (30.5%) and slightly below the state average (22.5%). Still, this rate is nearly double that of high-performing neighbors like Parkview (11.9%) and Shenandoah (10.6%), indicating that getting students to school consistently remains a hurdle. The school has shown effectiveness with African American students, but support for English Language Learners has dropped dramatically, from the 74th percentile statewide in 2023-2024 to the 16th percentile in 2026—a critical area for improvement. While Wedgewood is on an upward trajectory, families in the area have access to significantly better-performing options within a short distance.

Open Quote This is one of the out of ordinary schools. Staffs assumed what they known and stood their ground. They were shock when we proved that their point wrong. They are like a frog in the bottom of a well. They are old school. They should have kept their minds open to the 21st century.

Let say they thought that 2 + 5 = 7. This doesn't mean that 7 = 2 + 5. Wouldn't you parent agree? Seven can equals 1 + 6 (7 = 1 + 6) or (10 - 3)

They could have done it better, but the matter is that whether they are willing to make a change or not. Close Quote

Open Quote as of now my daughter goes to this school she says it sucks my son says it sucks and even the teachers said they have better things to do than to teach at this crappy school with an abundance of bad children. My daughter deserves better than the poor education that she is receiving, especially because of her teacher's careless and free for all attitude. We are fed up with the way this school works ,and how the teachers attitude affects my children's educational value ,and they don't use the statistics of life only for educational purposes. I for one think Wedgewood elementary is a horrible school compared to the rest of the E.B.R schools systems ,and my daughter and son agree.the sooner they can get out the better, my children are currently enrolled in mckinley middle magnet school. i am so proud of their endurance and precision.
