Summary

Southeast Middle School in Baton Rouge, LA, serves 826 students in grades 6-8 and is part of the East Baton Rouge Parish school district, which ranks in the bottom third of Louisiana districts.

The school faces significant challenges, most notably a chronic absenteeism rate of 40.8%—nearly double the state average and much higher than nearby schools like Denham Springs Junior High School (9.2%) and Bluff Middle School (10.4%). However, there are bright spots. In advanced math, 100% of students taking Algebra I passed the End-of-Course exam, far exceeding the district (51%) and state (65%) averages. The school also excels in supporting homeless students, ranking in the 64th percentile for that subgroup. Additionally, the student-teacher ratio has dropped from 17.9:1 to 12.4:1 over the past two years, suggesting a focus on smaller class sizes.

Context matters when evaluating this school. The nearby Sherwood Middle Academic Academy, a top-performing magnet school, has a much lower poverty rate and a chronic absenteeism rate of just 5.5%, which may draw more affluent families away from Southeast. Despite low overall test scores, the school’s dropout rate (1.7%) is lower than the district average (4.9%), indicating it keeps most students enrolled through 8th grade. For parents, this school offers strong advanced math programs and targeted support for vulnerable students, but families should be aware of the high absenteeism and the systemic challenges facing the East Baton Rouge Parish district compared to neighboring Livingston Parish and Ascension Parish.

Open Quote I have a child that is in the Southeast Middle Magnet Data program. This is his first year there in 6th grade. So far I have been very impressed with the teachers and curriculum offered in the data technology program. Everyone is issued a iPad to use at school and they are even able to take courses for high school credit. Principal Amber Boyd and her staff really want to see the students succeed and be prepared for entry into high school. Close Quote
