Summary

Captain Shreve High School is a large public high school in Shreveport, LA, serving 1,658 students in grades 9-12 as part of the Caddo Parish school district. This school stands out as a solid, mid-range option in a district with wide performance gaps, offering a stable environment that significantly outperforms nearby schools like Woodlawn High School and Booker T. Washington High, while providing a strong alternative to the higher-ranked C.E. Byrd High School.

One of the school's most notable strengths is its exceptional performance with African American students, ranking in the 75th percentile statewide for this group—a stark contrast to its overall 49th percentile rank. Captain Shreve also boasts a high graduation rate of 93.2% and a very low dropout rate of 0.9%, which is better than both the district and state averages, and even slightly exceeds the graduation rate at C.E. Byrd. Additionally, the school shows strong English Language Arts (ELA) proficiency, with 69% of students proficient in English I and 68% in English II, both above state averages. However, the school faces challenges in math and science, with only 45% proficient in Geometry and 54% in Biology, and a growing chronic absenteeism rate that has risen to 32.8%, now higher than the district average.

When compared to its direct competitor, C.E. Byrd High School, Captain Shreve holds its own in key areas. While Byrd outperforms in overall academic metrics and test scores, Captain Shreve achieves a slightly higher graduation rate while serving a student body with higher economic needs (52.71% free/reduced lunch vs. 42.72% at Byrd). This makes Captain Shreve a crucial "middle-class" option for families in the district who are not zoned for the magnet school or C.E. Byrd, providing a stable and relatively high-performing environment that acts as a bridge between struggling schools and top-tier options like Caddo Parish Magnet High School.

Open Quote Our kid was kept out of school for 5 years. The 26th District Attorney couldn't find Bio-NOT-AMOM. After spending $29k we did. We have TOTAL custody.
Every day we read to the kid, and he reads to us. EVERY DAY we go other math.
It's been 1200 days from the first day we when we went over 3rd-grade grammar with him.
He Comes Home Saying, "I got no homework." {cring at his vocab--it's what he hears in school.}
YET, he's reading at a 4/5TH grade level? The World History class he's in: the teacher Mr. Law fills out the test sheets for the kids {our kid could not pronounace/spell/or difine any of the words on Mr. Law's page}. YET the KID MAKES an 'A'. at every turn, the Shreve let's us down. Close Quote
