Summary

Pathways in Education-Louisiana Inc. in Shreveport, LA, is a non-traditional high school serving 307 students in grades 9-12 within the Caddo Parish school district, designed for students who have struggled in conventional school settings.

This school stands out dramatically from nearby schools due to its unique operational model. The student-to-teacher ratio is an extreme 930.3:1, which is vastly higher than schools like C.E. Byrd High School (20:1) or Caddo Parish Magnet High School (11.2:1), suggesting a primarily online or self-paced learning environment with minimal direct teacher interaction. The graduation rate is just 31.5%, less than half of nearby struggling schools like Booker T. Washington High (75.9%) and far below the district average of 82.6%. The dropout rate is 22.9%, over five times higher than the district average. Interestingly, the school reports a 0.0% chronic absenteeism rate, which is likely due to a different attendance tracking method for its online program rather than perfect student attendance.

Pathways serves a high-poverty population, with 70.68% of students qualifying for free or reduced lunch. While academic performance is generally low, it shows some volatility—for example, Biology proficiency was 53% one year but dropped to 26% the next. The school consistently ranks in the bottom 5% of Louisiana high schools. Compared to other low-performing schools in the area like Woodlawn High School (2nd percentile) and Booker T. Washington High (4th percentile), Pathways' challenges are more acute, with graduation rates that are less than half of those schools. This data suggests that while Pathways provides an important option for at-risk students who have disengaged from traditional education, the current model is struggling to achieve its primary goal of graduating students, raising important questions about long-term outcomes for its students.

Open Quote Pathways is a wonderful school that really cares about the kids, there is no drama or discipline issues and the kids all seem really happy. The kids get to go on some amazing trips, including a trip to their camp in Colorado - for FREE! Many of the kids come from Home School or from local schools that weren't doing much for them. Pathways catches them up and really teaches them. Close Quote
