Morton Middle School serves 604 students in grades 6–8 in Lexington, in Fayette County. Its latest results are generally stronger than state and district averages, but the most important finding for families is that 8th-grade performance is a clear weak spot, especially in reading: 8th-grade reading was 49%, down from 57% the previous year.

The school is strongest in math, science and social studies compared with the state, district and nearby-school averages. Across grades 6–8, math averaged 53%, versus 40% statewide, 46% in the district and 46% among nearby schools; reading averaged 58%, compared with 48%, 53% and 51%, respectively. Grade 7 science was 41%, versus 28% statewide, 34% in the district and 35% nearby. Grade 8 social studies was 53%, ahead of the state at 39%, the district at 45% and nearby schools at 47%. Editing and mechanics is a notable exception: its 43% was below the district’s 47% and the nearby average of 45%, though just above the state’s 42%. The 8th-grade reading result was only 0.2 points above the nearby-school average. Jessie M. Clark Middle School, Beaumont Middle School and SCAPA at Bluegrass have higher results in some comparisons.

Results have shifted over time: math rose from 48% in 2022–2023 to 53% in 2025–2026, while grade 8 writing fell 20 points, from 71% to 51%, and editing and mechanics fell 27 points, from 70% to 43%.
