Summary

Deep Springs Elementary School is a public elementary school in Lexington, Kentucky, serving 529 students in grades PK-5 as part of the Fayette County School District.

Despite having a relatively high per-student spending of $24,232, Deep Springs Elementary consistently ranks in the bottom half of Kentucky elementary schools, with significantly lower proficiency rates in core subjects like Mathematics, Reading, Science, and Social Studies compared to the district and state averages. The school's academic performance has remained consistently low over the past decade. However, the school's African American and Hispanic student subgroups perform relatively well compared to their peers statewide, suggesting that targeted interventions could potentially help improve overall outcomes.

Deep Springs Elementary faces additional challenges, including a high percentage of economically disadvantaged students (70-75% qualify for free or reduced-price lunch) and chronic absenteeism rates that are significantly higher than the state average. When compared to nearby schools like Ashland Elementary and Dixie Elementary Magnet School, Deep Springs Elementary generally performs worse academically, with lower proficiency rates and rankings, potentially due to the socioeconomic factors impacting the school community.

Open Quote The safety conditions at this institution are unacceptable. My daughter was assaulted, having been spat on and struck in the back of the head, and was unjustly blamed by Mr. Blair for not occupying her assigned seat, which had been taken. She was instructed to sit in the seat where the incident occurred and was subsequently sent home in tears. The assailant was male, adding a layer of severity to the situation as it involved abuse from the opposite sex. The school has shown a complete lack of accountability. We are making every effort to transfer our daughter to another institution and are prepared to involve law enforcement and the media if necessary. Close Quote

Open Quote I am extremely dissatisfied with this school. The constant bullying and lack of action from administrators is alarming. Furthermore, the school's accommodations for students with disabilities and social needs are inadequate. Teachers often prioritize talking over monitoring students during lunch, recess, and field trips. The quality of items provided to students from fundraisers and school trips is subpar, often consisting of unwanted or leftover items. In one instance, my child brought home a moldy pumpkin and apples. The school's aggressive fundraising tactics, which include daily emails, are also concerning. My child has been subjected to physical and verbal harassment, including verbal sexual harassment, and bullying, yet the school has taken no meaningful action. The lack of parental involvement from some families is also a concern. I have witnessed buses from the school emitting excessive smoke, and one bus even caught fire in the bus lot driving by it. My child has experienced recurring urinary tract infections due to being denied access to the restroom when needed. At the beginning of the school year, we were provided with a list of supplies to purchase and donate to the school. However, the teacher took supplies that we had purchased specifically for our child, which is unacceptable. We brought this to the teacher's attention, and as a result, our child was instructed to keep her supplies at home. It is not our responsibility to provide for other children, especially when there are alternative resources available to support families in need. We have attempted to transfer our child to a different school, but the district has denied our request. I strongly advise parents to consider alternative educational options for their children. For verification, I suggest reviewing the school's ratings on GreatSchools.org or consulting with parents on Reddit. Prior to attending this school, my child enjoyed learning, but now she has developed a strong aversion to attending school due to the negative experiences she has endured. Close Quote
