Larry A. Ryle High School serves grades 9–12 in Union, Kentucky, with 2,077 students, making it the largest of the nearby traditional high schools; Simon Kenton High School is next largest, with 1,893. Ryle’s clearest academic strength is 10th-grade math and reading, while 11th-grade writing is its most notable weakness.

Ryle’s 2025–2026 KSA results were above both state and district levels in math and reading: 56% of students were proficient in 10th-grade math, compared with 40% statewide and 52% in the district; reading was 59%, versus 49% statewide and 56% in the district. Among six nearby traditional schools, Ryle’s math and reading results were also above the respective averages of 51% and 57%. Writing tells a different story: 46% were proficient, one point below both the state and district, and below the nearby-school average of 53%; Ryle ranked sixth of seven nearby schools in writing. The results make math and reading relative strengths, but show that writing is an area where Ryle trails.

Ryle remains above the state midpoint overall, though its standing has fallen from a recent high: SchoolDigger ranked it 76th of 262 Kentucky high schools in 2025–2026, at the 71st percentile with four stars, compared with the 94th percentile and five stars in 2022–2023. SchoolDigger’s subgroup ranking is especially low for Special Education Students: the school was at the 2nd percentile for how well it serves this group, versus the 71st percentile overall; the comparison pool changed, so this result merits closer attention. Ryle’s reported student-teacher ratio was 18.6 in 2024–2025, and 34% of students were free/reduced lunch eligible that year. Chronic absenteeism has improved, falling from 26% in 2021–2022 to 17% in 2025–2026, though it remains above the Boone County district rate of 14%.

Like any school, you get what you put into it. If you take the right classes and stay focused, you'll get as good of an education as any around. There are plenty of opportunities to become involved and attain leadership skills. Also, Ryle offers a great selection of classes. As I am now a sophomore in college and received a scholarship to attend an out-of-state school, I can say that I couldn't have been more prepared to study at the university level. Ryle is the quintessential high school: wonderful teachers, great athletics, memorable dances, and so much more. The teachers at Ryle have had a profound impact on my life and I wouldn't change a thing about my high school experience. Having gone to a private school for K-8, it was definitely a different experience, but in the best way possible. Close Quote
