Summary:

Schools in ZIP code 66061 include 26 schools: 16 elementary, five middle and five high schools, along with specialized campuses and a grade-12-only virtual school. Across conventional schools, average results are above the state in most subjects, but high-school science averages below the state and results vary sharply from school to school. The most important finding is that area-wide averages can hide very different outcomes for students at individual schools.

Prairie Trail Middle School is the strongest all-around standout: it leads local middle schools in ELA, math and science, scores 26, 34 and 29 points above the state in those subjects, and ranks 5th of 368 Kansas middle schools on SchoolDigger. Meadow Lane Elementary leads elementary ELA and math, including 83% proficiency in math, and ranks 19th of 657 on SchoolDigger; Clearwater Creek Elementary leads elementary science at 74%. Olathe Northwest High School leads local high schools in all three subjects, though its science result is only 2 points above the state. At the lower end, Santa Fe Trail Middle School trails the state by 7 points in ELA, 6 in math and 1 in science; Ridgeview Elementary is lowest in elementary ELA and math, while Rolling Ridge Elementary is lowest in science.

Recent results show improvement, but some schools still have ground to make up. Middle-school averages rose in all three subjects over two years, and high-school averages rose 8 points in ELA and 6 in math; elementary ELA was an exception, improving less than the state result. Washington Elementary made especially large one-year gains—10 points in ELA, 15 in math and 19 in science—yet remained below the state in all three. Its SchoolDigger rank improved from 608th to 531st of roughly 650 elementary schools. Context alone does not explain score differences: Westview Elementary and Washington report similar free/reduced-lunch rates, 78% and 80%, and student-teacher ratios of 9.0 and 9.4, but Westview scored 21 points higher in ELA, 29 in math and 11 in science.
