Summary

Tri-Township Elementary School in Wanatah, IN, is a small PK–6 school with 141 students, part of Tri-Township Cons School Corp, a district ranked 230th of 374 Indiana districts (39th percentile, 2 stars). In 2025–2026, the school ranked 737th of 1,015 schools (27th percentile, 1 star), a sharp drop from its 2015–2016 through 2024–2025 pattern of mostly 44th–64th percentile and several 3-star years.

Academically, 2025–2026 was weak: all-grades ELA was 32.79, Math 31.15, and Science 14.29. Only 3rd grade ELA was essentially at the state average (40.91 vs. 40.8). Every other tested grade and subject shown was below the state level, often by a wide margin—especially 4th grade science (14.29 vs. 43.8) and 5th grade social studies (24 vs. 47.2). From 2024–2025 to 2025–2026, ELA fell 7.51 points, Math 15.12 points, Science 4.23 points, and 5th grade social studies 41.38 points. Because the school is very small, a few students changing proficiency status can swing these percentages. By contrast, South Central Elementary School, a PK–6 school only 4.83 miles away, had ELA 50.17, Math 64.45, and Science 57.04 while spending $10,353 per student. Westville Elementary School had similar ELA but higher Math and Science, and Parkview Elementary School, Thomas Jefferson Elementary School, and Flint Lake Elementary School posted much stronger results despite similar or higher free/reduced lunch rates.

The puzzle is that Tri-Township Elementary School has unusually favorable resources: the highest per-student spending in the comparison group—$16,597 in 2023–2024, up about 52% over three years—and the lowest student-teacher ratio, 13.4 in 2024–2025. Its chronic absenteeism rate is 6.8%, well below the state’s 16.7% and lower than most nearby schools, so attendance does not obviously explain the low achievement. Its free/reduced lunch rate, 48.23%, is mid-to-high but similar to some nearby schools that produce much higher proficiency, so poverty is an incomplete explanation. The key question for parents is whether 2025–2026 is a one-year cohort or small-sample dip, since the school’s longer history was closer to average, or the start of a more sustained decline.
