Geist Montessori Academy

Summary:

Geist Montessori Academy is a public charter elementary school serving grades K-8 in McCordsville, Indiana, with a student population of 233. While the school is part of the Hamilton Southeastern Schools district, which is ranked 184 out of 364 districts in Indiana, Geist Montessori Academy faces several challenges compared to its nearby high-performing counterparts.

One key difference is the school's racial makeup, with a significantly higher percentage of white students (66.52%) compared to nearby schools like Fall Creek Elementary (74.53% white) and Amy Beverland Elementary (43.95% white). Additionally, Geist Montessori Academy's test scores in ILEARN English Language Arts (38.53%) and Math (24.77%) are lower than the state averages and significantly behind high-performing schools like Thorpe Creek Elementary (69.48% ELA, 83.13% Math). The school also has a relatively high chronic absenteeism rate of 18.4%, which is much higher than nearby schools like Brooks School Elementary (4.6%) and Geist Elementary (4.2%).

While Geist Montessori Academy has seen a steady increase in its per-student spending, from $5,599 in 2018-2019 to $10,152 in 2021-2022, this is still lower than some of the nearby high-performing schools like Early Learning Center ($13,931) and Oaklandon Elementary ($12,715). The school's performance and metrics suggest the need for further analysis and potential interventions to address these areas of concern and improve the educational experience for its students.

Open Quote GMA is a wonderful school. It is sad that it is compared to others based on state test scores. These tests have nothing to do with the Montessori Method. I hope we can do away with them soon and let the teachers get back to teaching. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
