Summary:

Mt Vernon Community School Corp is a five-school Indiana district — three elementary schools serving grades K–4, one middle school for grades 7–8, and one high school for grades 9–12 — with about 4,823 students. The district rates in the top quartile of Indiana districts (74th percentile, 4 stars), though its individual schools perform very differently.

The strength is at the top. Mt Vernon High School is the flagship: a 97.0% graduation rate against 89.7% statewide, SAT reading/writing at 61.06% proficient versus 51.9% statewide, SAT math at 33.63% versus 25.6%, and biology results about 31 points above the state. Mt Vernon Middle School is the most consistent performer, with 7th and 8th grade math each roughly 9 points above state, although its reading scores trail slightly and its 11.6% chronic absenteeism is the district's highest. Fortville Elementary School has the district's best attendance (5.7% chronic absenteeism), the strongest elementary math (58.98%), and broad year-over-year gains in math and science.

Elementary results are more uneven. McCordsville Elementary School swung widely — 3rd grade reading 11.6 points above state but 4th grade reading 11.5 points below, plus a 14.5-point science drop and a rank slide from the 81st to the 53rd percentile. Mt Comfort Elementary School has improved its rank two years running and beats the state in 4th grade reading, despite the highest free/reduced lunch rate (43.14%). Spending and poverty do not track outcomes here, and the district's clear comparative advantage is math rather than reading. Every school remains below the state's 16.7% chronic absenteeism rate.
