As a district it ranks 270th of 374 in Indiana (28th percentile, 1 star), and its outcomes trail state averages: graduation is 83.9% vs 89.7% state, chronic absenteeism is 27.4% vs 16.7% state, and 2025-26 ILEARN proficiency is 31.23% in ELA, 33.00% in math, and 35.12% in science. That district average, however, hides very large differences between individual schools.

At the top, Honey Creek Middle School ranks in the 88th percentile with 4 stars, posting ELA 55.97, math 51.78, and science 49.77 — far above district levels. Dixie Bee Elementary School (76th percentile, 4 stars) leads in math (61.25) and science (59.78), while Lost Creek Elementary School (74th percentile) is strong across every subject. Riley Elementary School has the district’s lowest chronic absenteeism (6.9%) and lowest free/reduced lunch rate (35.16%). Among high schools, Terre Haute South Vigo High School is the strongest comprehensive option, and West Vigo High School has the best graduation rate at 93.6%.

At the other end, Benjamin Franklin Elementary School (5th percentile), Farrington Grove Elementary School (6th percentile), and Sarah Scott Middle School (7th percentile) post the lowest proficiency, with chronic absenteeism as high as 44.3% at Sarah Scott. Alternative settings such as Booker T Washington Alt School and Vigo Virtual School Academy face the greatest challenges, and their populations differ from comprehensive schools. Notably, higher spending does not guarantee better results, and absenteeism is a district-wide issue — even at both comprehensive Terre Haute high schools, where it reaches roughly 42%.
