Summary

Red Oak Elementary School in Stockbridge, GA, serves 638 students in Pre-K through 5th grade as part of the Henry County School District, where about 70% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch.

Red Oak has faced a decade-long decline in its state ranking, falling from the 54th percentile in 2015-2016 to the 25th percentile in 2025-2026. The school's most pressing challenge is chronic absenteeism, which has consistently exceeded state averages—22.0% of students were chronically absent in 2025-2026 compared to 17.7% statewide. This gap has widened over time, and nearby Dutchtown Elementary School, just 3.9 miles away with similar demographics, has a significantly lower rate at 17.7%. Math proficiency also trails state averages, with only 24.5% of 5th graders proficient in 2025-2026 versus 37.4% statewide. The school's grade-level progression shows a concerning pattern: math proficiency drops from 37.7% in 3rd grade to 24.5% by 5th grade.

Despite these challenges, there are bright spots. In 2022-2023, 5th-grade science proficiency reached 40.7%, exceeding both district and state averages, though this strength has not been sustained. The school also shows relative effectiveness with its African American students, who rank in the 48th percentile statewide—notably better than the school's overall 25th percentile ranking. Per-student spending has increased to $13,464, which is higher than Dutchtown's $12,519, yet outcomes remain lower, raising questions about resource allocation. The student-teacher ratio of 16.3 is also higher than most nearby schools. While Kay R Pace Elementary School of the Arts in Clayton County demonstrates that high-poverty schools can achieve strong results, Red Oak's persistent absenteeism and declining math scores suggest that targeted interventions around attendance and early math support could be key levers for improvement.

Open Quote ROE has been terrible for my child and I. The principle let's the teachers walk all over him and the children. Granted there are a few good teachers, but the vast number of unprofessional, uncaring and unmotivated teachers makes it a bad experience for everyone at some point in time. In kindergarten my child had a teacher that screamed at the little kids all day long and would never take them out for recess because she was on a breathing machine. She literally referred to the kindergartener as a "dangerous situation" when i showed up to the class to volunteer. She had blocked the door, sent all the other children out the room, and was having a screaming match with this little boy. I immediately entered the room and placed the frightened child on my lap and calmed him down. As my child advanced in grade level, he/ she was bullied by both children and teachers with no resolve. Yet, was disciplined for sharing Halloween candy at lunch? Teachers do not care about the success of your child at this school. If your child is having problems learning, if you don't inquire to find out what's going on with them you'll never know....sad really and unacceptable. Close Quote
