Summary

Dutchtown Elementary School in Hampton, GA, serves approximately 962 students in grades PK-5 and is part of the Henry County School District. The school holds a 2-star rating and ranks in the 49th percentile statewide, placing it above most nearby elementary schools despite serving a student population where about 63% qualify for free or reduced lunch.

One of Dutchtown's standout strengths is its mathematics instruction in the early grades. In 3rd grade, 55.7% of students scored proficient in math—nearly 19 points above the district average and more than 7 points above the state average. The school also excels with specific student groups, ranking in the 74th percentile statewide for African American students and the 72nd percentile for Hispanic students, both earning 4-star ratings. Additionally, Dutchtown's chronic absenteeism rate of 17.7% matches the state average and sits below the district's 19.6%, a notable achievement given its higher-poverty context. The school also operates efficiently, spending $12,519 per student—the lowest among nearby schools like Hampton Elementary ($16,925) and Smith-Barnes Elementary ($19,788)—while still achieving the highest state ranking in its immediate comparison group.

However, Dutchtown faces clear challenges. Math proficiency declines sharply as students advance: 3rd grade scores are well above state averages, but by 5th grade only 34.5% are proficient, compared to 44.1% statewide. Science performance is also a persistent weakness, with 30.4% proficiency versus the state's 44.2%. Despite these areas for growth, Dutchtown outperforms most neighboring schools—including Wesley Lakes Elementary (7th percentile) and Oakland Elementary (28th percentile)—making it a relative success story in the area. With a student-teacher ratio of 15.9:1, the school achieves strong results even with larger class sizes, suggesting effective instructional practices worth noting for parents.

Open Quote Curriculum related, great school, our child has done well so far.

As for the administration, I can't say anything but horrible. They could seriously care less about anything important. We had major trouble with bullying last year, and nothing was ever done. I pull up at the school one day, to hear rap music blaring outside of the gym, with cuss words and off color statements being made relating to female anatomy, and was left standing waiting to be acknowledged by the principal for 10 minutes. When she finally came to address it, the response she gave me was pretty much like she was just patting my head and brushing me off. A child brought a weapon on a bus, a child that had been complained about numerous times by numerous parents of children on the bus and they had done nothing, and we were kept completely out of the loop of what the situation was. We will be transferring out of this district as soon as we can. We would have gone earlier, but the school lied to us about the dates the school board set for choice of schools. Close Quote
