Summary

Flippen Elementary School in McDonough, GA, serves approximately 559 students in grades PK-5 as part of Henry County Schools, with a student-teacher ratio of 12.6:1 and about 70% of students qualifying for free or reduced lunch.

Flippen shows a clear strength in early elementary math. In the most recent testing year, 36.4% of 3rd graders and 40.9% of 4th graders scored proficient in math—essentially matching or exceeding the district average. That's notably better than nearby schools like Wesley Lakes Elementary (22.1%) and Birch Creek Elementary (23.1%) at the 3rd grade level. However, the school faces a sharp drop-off in 5th grade: only 18.7% of 5th graders were proficient in math, compared to 29.8% districtwide and 44.1% statewide. This pattern has persisted for several years, and 5th grade science scores (24.4%) also lag the district (31.1%), suggesting a broader challenge in upper elementary grades rather than a math-specific issue.

On a positive note, Flippen has made real progress reducing chronic absenteeism, dropping from 27.4% in 2023-2024 to 18.9%—now below the district average (19.6%) and much better than Walnut Creek Elementary (26.3%) or Stockbridge Elementary (25.9%). The school also spends more per student ($15,711) than many neighbors, though Dutchtown Elementary spends less ($12,519) yet achieves stronger results. Compared to East Lake Elementary—just 4 miles away, where 64.3% of 3rd graders are proficient in math—Flippen's early math success is more modest, but the school still outperforms several nearby options. The most pressing opportunity for improvement is clearly the transition to 5th grade, where targeted support could help sustain the strong foundations built in earlier grades.

Open Quote We loved virtually everything about Flippen. We are in the military and have been to four different school districts over the years. Flippen is fabulous; we really hated to leave. Flippen has the resources to accommodate every child's current level and help them excel. As far as I am aware, discipline is a non-issue. The administration makes it convenient for parents to be as involved as they want to be. The teachers are dedicated and actually enjoy teaching there. The expectations are high and the results are even higher. Close Quote
