Benefield stands out most for its exceptional work with African American students, ranking in the 88th percentile statewide for this group—a remarkable achievement that far exceeds the school's overall ranking. Science is another bright spot, with 5th-grade proficiency (44.9%) now exceeding the state average. The school has also made meaningful progress reducing chronic absenteeism, dropping from 21.1% to 15.5% over two years—now below the state average of 17.7%. Areas needing attention include performance with Hispanic students (48th percentile) and Special Education students (44th percentile).

Compared to nearby schools, Benefield sits in the middle of the pack. Craig Elementary (91st percentile) dramatically outperforms Benefield, though it serves a much more affluent population. Jackson Elementary (74th percentile) also outperforms Benefield despite serving a similarly high-poverty population, with notably lower chronic absenteeism (8.2% vs. 15.5%). However, Benefield outperforms Jenkins Elementary (41st percentile) and Lawrenceville Elementary (30th percentile), both of which serve similar socioeconomic populations. Per-student spending has increased 35.7% over four years to $15,151, and the student-teacher ratio has improved to 12.6, reflecting the district's investment in additional staffing.

Open Quote When a teacher like Mrs. Swisher, fifth grade, chooses Tupac Shakur as a role model for her class for Black History Month and puts a picture of him wearing the red bandana (a sign of the gang he represented) on her class room door I have to question her and the principals judgement. Even though he was a good artist he was a gang member that objectified women by calling them bhes and wh++es and was shot down in the streets by rival gang members. Is this a teacher you want teaching your children? A teacher that threatens her students with "what goes on in my class room stays in my class room". What is she trying to hide? If she were a man would parents worry more about this kind of behavior around children? Also her class room is a fire hazard with no clear way for children to escape in an emergency. Close Quote
