Summary

Dunwoody High School is a large public high school in Dunwoody, GA, serving over 2,000 students in grades 9-12 within the DeKalb County district. The school currently holds a 3-star rating and ranks in the 55th percentile statewide, a notable drop from its historical performance in the 70th-80th percentile range during the early 2020s.

The most significant concern for parents is the school's exceptionally high chronic absenteeism rate of 33.0% for the 2025-2026 school year. This is nearly double the state average (17.7%) and more than double the rate at nearby Chamblee High School (15.0%), Paul Duke STEM High School (14.6%), and Centennial High School (14.7%). This high absenteeism rate has persisted for four years and likely contributes to the school's declining academic metrics. The graduation rate of 82.8% is slightly above the district average (81.4%) but below the state average (87.2%) and down from the school's recent high of 89.6% in 2023-2024.

Academically, Dunwoody shows a clear split between subjects. In Biology, 52.1% of students are proficient, exceeding both the district (39.3%) and state (47.2%) averages. However, only 27% of students are proficient in Algebra I, well below the district (38%) and state (48.1%) averages. This pattern has persisted for two years, indicating a consistent challenge in mathematics. When compared to Chamblee High School, a demographically similar school just 3.3 miles away, Dunwoody trails in nearly every metric, including a lower state ranking (55th vs. 82nd percentile), lower graduation rate, and significantly lower Algebra I proficiency (27% vs. 49.6%). While the school has strengths in science and serves its White student population well (82nd percentile), it faces significant achievement gaps for Hispanic students (11th percentile) and English Language Learners (7th percentile). The overall picture is of a school in transition that must address attendance and provide targeted support to reverse its recent decline.

Open Quote Our daughter was the class of 2020, the year of Covid (no prom or grad ceremony)
But what I want to say is that when she started at DHS, this school n Chamblee HS were in the top 10 of best performing schools.
I am literally shocked their ranking now. Our daughter took many AP courses and graduated w/ honors. She was in the Drama club n performed in many musicals and was the lead Alto in the chorus. This was an excellent school. I’m sure it still is. Great parent participation and communication between parents and staff at that time. My hope is that Dunwoody improves and reclaim they’re spot of being back in that top 10 of Greatest GA schools. I still think it’s a great school Close Quote

Open Quote Dunwoody High School has improved over the past several years. I'm sure it will continue to improve as well. There are more and more kids taking AP's and scoring a 3 or better. There are more kids graduating and going to higher education. They have an incredible Finance Academy headed by Steve Fortenberry. They have excellent sports program for boys as well as girls. Construction was just completed last year which updated the science labs, added classrooms and a beautiful auditorium. Dunwoody High School is supported heavily by local businesses and a very active PTA and Booster Club. School spirit is everywhere in the Dunwoody community. GO WILDCATS! Close Quote
