Summary

Vanderlyn Elementary School in Dunwoody, GA, is a consistently high-performing school serving 441 students in grades PK through 5 within the DeKalb County district.

Vanderlyn is a clear standout in its district, ranking in the 92nd percentile statewide (96th out of 1,219 elementary schools) with a 5-star rating. In math, proficiency rates are roughly double to triple the district averages—73.8% in 3rd grade, 74.3% in 4th grade, and 81.5% in 5th grade, compared to district averages of 35.9%, 37.5%, and 31.7%. In 5th grade science, 67.7% of students are proficient, versus 30.4% for the district and 44.2% for the state. The school also boasts an exceptionally low chronic absenteeism rate of 6.5%, compared to 26.7% for the district and 17.7% for the state. This strong attendance culture has been consistent over five years of data, even during a spike in 2022-2023 when the rate hit 14.6%—still less than half the district rate.

The contrast with nearby schools is striking. Just 0.38 miles away, Dunwoody Elementary School posts a 52.4% 5th grade math proficiency rate (a 29.1-point gap) and a 13.4% chronic absenteeism rate (more than double Vanderlyn's). Kingsley Elementary School (0.86 miles) and Chesnut Elementary School (1.56 miles) trail by 30–50 percentage points in math. The only nearby school that consistently outperforms Vanderlyn is Austin Elementary School (1.47 miles), which ranks 46th statewide. While Vanderlyn's state ranking has drifted slightly from its peak of 27th in 2015-2016 to 96th today, its raw test scores have actually improved—5th grade math rose from 76.6% to 81.5% over three years—suggesting the shift reflects stronger performance statewide, not a decline at Vanderlyn. With per-student spending of $19,382, the school achieves far better outcomes than schools spending more, making it a strong return on investment for families.

Open Quote Vanderlyn is one of the best schools in Dekalb County. The school is very high in academic achievements and has many smart children. They do provide extra help for children who need it. We have had a good experience at this school and if we've had any problems, it was solved instantly. It's more than a school, the teachers, the parents, and the children are part of a wide community. My children loved going to class! The new principle has also added many extra activities after school. I would definitely recommend Vanderlyn Elementary as a great model for education for young children. Close Quote
