Summary

Saugatuck Elementary School is a K-5 school in Westport, CT, serving 395 students as part of the Westport School District, one of Connecticut's top-ranked districts. The school currently ranks 24th out of 491 Connecticut elementary schools (95th percentile, 5 stars), its best ranking in recent years — and it places ahead of every other nearby Westport elementary school, including Green's Farms School, Long Lots School, King's Highway Elementary School, and Coleytown Elementary School.

Academically, Saugatuck posts proficiency rates far above state averages in both English language arts and mathematics. In 2025–26, 4th-grade ELA proficiency was 87.1% and 4th-grade math proficiency was 88.2%, compared to state averages of roughly 51% and 52%. The school has been on a steady upward trajectory, improving from #43 in 2021–22 to #24 in 2025–26. Interestingly, King's Highway Elementary School is just 0.18 miles away, yet Saugatuck outperformed it in most subjects this year. The gap with nearby Norwalk schools is even more pronounced: Wolfpit Integrated Arts Elementary School, only 1.25 miles away, reported 4th-grade ELA proficiency of just 42.9%.

Beyond test scores, Saugatuck boasts excellent attendance and resources. Chronic absenteeism has dropped from 13.2% in 2021–22 to just 3.1% in 2025–26, well below the district average of 6.6% and the state average of 16.4%. The school maintains a favorable student-teacher ratio of 10.6:1. One nuance worth noting: while male students rank 13th statewide among their peers, female students rank 44th — still strong, but a pattern the school may want to examine. Also, 5th-grade math scores, when reported, tend to trail the school's 3rd- and 4th-grade math results, suggesting upper-elementary math is an area to monitor.
