Summary

Bedford Middle School serves 710 students in grades 6–8 in Westport, CT, and is part of the Westport School District, which ranks 10th out of 153 districts statewide. Bedford Middle School has earned a 5-star rating every year since 2015–16 and currently ranks 9th out of 258 Connecticut middle schools (97th percentile). The school operates in an economically advantaged community, with only 3.5% of students receiving free/reduced-price lunch, a low student-teacher ratio of 9.8, and per-pupil spending of roughly $21,900.

Bedford's state test scores are dramatically above Connecticut averages. On the latest assessments, 6th grade ELA proficiency was 75.4% compared to 51.2% statewide, while 6th grade math proficiency was 78.4% versus 44.4% statewide. Across every grade and subject, proficiency rates sit in the mid-70s to mid-80s, compared to state averages in the 40s and 50s. Math is Bedford's strongest subject, running about 35 percentage points above the state average. The school also posts strong results for many student groups; disabled students, for example, ranked 7th of 104 statewide in 2020–21.

That said, Bedford is currently the second-ranked middle school in its own district. Coleytown Middle School ranks 5th in Connecticut (98th percentile) and outscores Bedford in nearly every tested subject, including 7th grade math (86.7 vs. 80.2) and 8th grade science (84.4 vs. 76.1). Nearby Middlebrook School in Wilton and Weston Middle School also outpace Bedford in 8th grade math and science. Bedford's chronic absenteeism rate of 8.0% is half the state average (16.4%) but slightly above the district average of 6.6%, and special education results have been less consistent over time. Even so, Bedford remains one of the strongest middle schools in Connecticut by nearly any measure.
