Jefferson Marine Science Elementary School stands out for its significantly higher percentage of Hispanic students (69.41%) compared to the surrounding schools, which range from 34.06% to 69.7% Hispanic students. Academically, the school consistently underperforms the Norwalk School District and the state of Connecticut in standardized test scores for English Language Arts and Mathematics across all grade levels. For example, in 2022-2023, only 17.6% of 3rd-grade students at Jefferson Marine Science were proficient or better in ELA, compared to 32.6% in the Norwalk School District and 45.5% statewide. Additionally, the school has a very high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 65.18% to 78.43% over the past three school years, significantly higher than the surrounding schools, which range from 38.99% to 61.08%.

Despite having a relatively low student-teacher ratio, ranging from 12.1 to 15.2 over the past three school years, Jefferson Marine Science Elementary School has consistently ranked in the bottom 20-25% of Connecticut elementary schools over the past several years, with a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger. This suggests that the school is facing unique challenges in providing a high-quality education to its predominantly Hispanic and low-income student population, which may not be solely related to class size. Addressing these challenges will likely require a multifaceted approach that considers the school's specific needs and the broader socioeconomic and educational context of the community.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Excellent school, no complaints about it. Very science focused- Lots of programmes and collaborations from various companies - eg GE science classes. My 2 kids had a good time here. Lots of field trips/ activities to places like maritime, stepping stones etc. Very good teachers, they have been very patient with the kids. It was blue ribbon winning school 2015-16 and a US bronze health winner this year 2016. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
