Summary

North End Middle School serves 766 students in grades 6–8 in Waterbury, CT, and is part of the Waterbury School District, a district that ranks near the bottom of Connecticut school systems. The school itself ranks 237th out of 258 Connecticut middle schools (8th percentile) with 0 stars, and roughly 86% of its students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch — among the highest rates in the area.

Academically, North End posts the lowest proficiency rates among comparable nearby middle schools. In 2025-26, ELA proficiency ranged from 18.5% to 22.8% across grades, compared to district rates of 29.1%–32.2% and state rates around 51%. Math is the most serious concern, with proficiency between 8.2% and 9.9% in every grade — less than one-quarter the statewide rate of roughly 44%. Eighth-grade science proficiency was 23.6%, versus 50.9% statewide. The gap is stark even when compared to demographically similar schools: Michael F. Wallace Middle School serves nearly the same poverty level (85.9% free/reduced lunch) but posts notably higher scores in ELA (31.6%–36.8%), math (14.5%–17.7%), and science (32.1%). Out-of-district schools like Tyrrell Middle School (ranked 88th) and Memorial Middle School (ranked 83rd) perform in entirely different tiers, with math proficiency often exceeding 50%.

There are some encouraging signs, however. Science proficiency has improved steadily from 13.8% in 2023-24 to 23.6% in 2025-26, and chronic absenteeism has dropped from 32.0% in 2021-22 to 19.9% — better than the district average of 23.1% and below West Side Middle School's 26.5%, though still above the state's 16.4%. The school also has a favorable student-teacher ratio of 9.9 and spends about $17,088 per student, more than many neighboring schools. But a major red flag is special education: after ranking in the 56th percentile statewide in 2021-22, that subgroup fell to dead last (27th of 27 schools) in 2024-25. With math proficiency below 10% in every grade, the clearest priorities are dramatically improving math instruction, reversing the special education decline, and building on the recent gains in science and among African American students.

Open Quote Where do I begin? The stairwell from the first floor is still dirty and smelled like urine on the first day of school. Classes are overloaded. The school has a dress code but what's the point when they need to focus on bigger issues happening, which the teachers don't seem to be notice or don't address. They seem to major on minors which make the environment unenjoyable. I don't recommend this school. Close Quote

Open Quote There is very much discrimination of teacher american with hispanic students, very much bullying and the administration is useless, when the students are sad or traumatized by situations lived in other countries, they are simply punished, they do not help the students to progress Close Quote
