Washington Middle School is a public middle school in Meriden, CT, serving 536 students in grades 6–8 as part of the Meriden School District. The school serves a high-poverty community, with 86.4% of students eligible for free/reduced-price lunch — the highest rate among Meriden's three middle schools. Chronic absenteeism is a significant challenge, with 24.7% of students chronically absent in the most recent year, more than double the rate at nearby Edison Middle School (10.9%).

Edison Middle School, located just 0.28 miles away, ranks 110th statewide (57th percentile) with roughly 20–25 percentage points higher proficiency in most subjects, despite serving a similar student population. Lincoln Middle School also ranks higher at 149th statewide. For parents, the most important takeaway is that attendance and student engagement appear to be powerful levers — closing the chronic absenteeism gap could be the single most promising path toward improving academic outcomes at Washington.
