Summary

Hamilton Avenue School is a PK-5 elementary school in Greenwich, CT, serving 299 students and belonging to the Greenwich School District. While the district itself is highly ranked, Hamilton Avenue is the lowest-ranked elementary school among its nearby Greenwich peers – placing 161st out of 491 Connecticut elementary schools in 2025-2026, with about 60% of students qualifying for free/reduced lunch and a chronic absenteeism rate (17.5%) that is more than double the district average.

Test scores at Hamilton Avenue are well below district averages – especially in math, where proficiency gaps often reach 25-30 percentage points – but they generally stay above state averages, and the school has shown strong gains in recent years. Notably, the school's student-teacher ratio is the lowest in the comparison group at 7.9 to 1, reflecting a significant investment in staffing. When compared to New Lebanon School, which has a nearly identical poverty rate but ranks 10th in the state, Hamilton Avenue's lower performance appears tied more to attendance than to demographics. Meanwhile, it outperforms Westover School in Stamford, a school with similar poverty levels, by roughly 30 points in third-grade ELA and 20 points in math.

The school has improved rapidly, with its state ranking jumping from 287th in 2023-2024 to 161st in 2025-2026, and third-grade ELA proficiency soaring from 25.6% to 71% over the same period. Subgroup data shows strong results for Hispanic students, low-income students, and special education students, all of whom perform above the statewide median for their groups. Despite these gains, chronic absenteeism remains the biggest concern – even after dropping from 29.9% in 2021-2022, it still exceeds the state average and is roughly double the district's. In short, Hamilton Avenue is a high-needs school in an affluent district that is trending upward and serving its students well in many respects, but attendance remains the key obstacle to closing the gap with its Greenwich neighbors.

Open Quote Major improvement since new leadership in 2015, A principal who cares about children, is straight forward, and her main concern is their success!!

They have changed the curriculum and introduced the STEM program which is Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics which is inquiry based and hands on learning. Our children will be learning the whats, whys, and how's of composting, the weather with the new weatherbug station, the children will be tech savvy, they also have musical instruction and learn to play violin, read sheet music, will learn spanish.
