Summary

Trailblazer Elementary School in Colorado Springs, CO, serves 211 students in grades PK–5 as part of Colorado Springs School District No. 11, and its 2-star rating places it at the 39th percentile statewide. About 55% of students qualify for free/reduced lunch, a figure that has risen over the past three years. The school enjoys a favorable 13:1 student-teacher ratio, and its chronic absenteeism rate of 26.9% is well below the district average of 45.8% and slightly better than the state average of 28.4%, though it did rise from 19.8% the prior year.

Academically, Trailblazer shows a distinct split between reading and math. ELA proficiency reached 41.7%, outperforming the district's 36.9% but trailing the state's 44.7%. Early literacy is a particular strength—3rd grade ELA hit 48.4%, above both district and state averages—though those gains fade by 4th and 5th grade. Math, by contrast, lags at just 27.7% proficiency, below both the district (32.1%) and state (37.3%) averages across every grade level. Nearby Chipeta Elementary School, less than a mile away, is a 5-star school with 76% ELA and 71.4% math proficiency and a far lower poverty rate, while lower-performing neighbors like Edison Elementary School and Jackson Elementary School present a different challenge. Trailblazer sits in the middle of this uneven school landscape.

Two trends stand out. Math proficiency has reversed from a relative strength (39–41% in prior years) to a weakness, now below district and state averages, while ELA improved sharply from 29.3% two years ago. The school also shows a notable gender gap: boys rank at the 46th percentile statewide among males, while girls rank at just the 26th percentile among females. Trailblazer shares a campus with Spark Online Academy, a very different online program with much lower test scores and far higher absenteeism, so the two should not be compared directly. The school's ability to reverse its math decline and sustain early literacy gains will likely determine whether it can close the gap with top-performing neighbors in Academy School District No. 20, including Foothills Elementary School, Rockrimmon Elementary School, and Woodmen-Roberts Elementary School.

Open Quote The school's academics are are suffering due to this Next Gen crap. I am having to teach my kids at home to keep them up to speed all the time. The principal cares about image and appearances over real education. Kids are sitting in front of screens far too much. Good teachers are leaving to get away from the Next Gen model. There are some good things here, yes, but the negatives are starting to outweigh the good and I will be choicing my kids out of this school next year to a place where education matters more than image.
