Summary

Howbert Elementary School is a PK-5 elementary school serving 255 students in Colorado Springs' west side, part of the Colorado Springs School District No. 11. In the latest state ranking, Howbert ranks 235 out of 943 Colorado elementary schools, placing it in the 75th percentile with a 4-star rating. That's a strong result for a school in a district that ranks in the 43rd percentile statewide. The school has historically been solid, and this year represents a rebound after a dip to the 53rd percentile in 2024-2025.

Howbert's academic performance is well above district and state averages. Its 2025-2026 CMAS proficiency rates show 58% in ELA, 53.6% in math, and 48.4% in 5th-grade science, compared with district rates of 36.9%, 32.1%, and 27.0%. Among nearby schools, Howbert ranks in the top tier, third-highest in ELA and math behind Chipeta Elementary School and Academy for Advanced and Creative Learning, and ahead of Bristol Elementary School, Steele Elementary School, and Manitou Springs Elementary School. The contrast with its closest geographic neighbor, Mountain Song Community School (just 0.89 miles away), is striking: Howbert posts 58% vs. 27.3% in ELA and 53.6% vs. 13.3% in math, despite serving similar demographics. Upper-grade performance is especially strong.

The main areas to watch are chronic absenteeism and subgroup consistency. Howbert's chronic absenteeism rate rose from 24.4% in 2023-2024 to 33.7% in 2024-2025, now worse than the state average of 28.4% and much higher than nearby schools like Steele Elementary School (14.8%) and Chipeta Elementary School (20.0%). Low-income student outcomes have also been volatile, swinging from the 91st percentile in 2023-2024 to the 41st percentile the following year, with similar swings for male students. Howbert serves a relatively high proportion of economically disadvantaged students (49.8% free/reduced lunch) while still outperforming most peers with lower poverty rates. If the school can improve attendance and stabilize subgroup performance, it has the foundation to push into the upper echelon of Colorado elementary schools.

Open Quote Not a great school if your child needs additional help. You'll face controversy if you send your 5 yr old to Kindergarten and not preschool. 6 and 7 year olds are the norm there. Don't expect exciting or educational field trips. Their only field trip was a few blocks away to the Garden of the Gods Information Center, not even the actual park. Howbert isn't open to the fact that kids learn at different paces. They strictly adhere to D-11’s guidelines. My son never went to preschool. Although he was slightly under standardized test scores, he made significant improvements each quarter. I saw his ability to learn this much and this fast in a year. They did not. The principal was angered when I declined her suggestion of holding him back another year. Their arguments turned to personal attacks (my son was listening to the whole thing). His principal pointed to his stick figure drawings. "Look at his people. There's no neck or body. This is a sign of immature thinking and underdevelopment". VERY UNPROFESSIONAL. This made my son cry. I had to reassure him that he was smart. I had to repair the emotional damage that his "mentors" caused. To us, Howbert was detrimental and very callous. Close Quote
