Summary

Johnson Elementary serves 283 students in kindergarten through grade 5 in San Diego, within San Diego Unified. In 2025–26, 33% of students met proficiency in English language arts (ELA), 22% in math and 16% in science. Those results were below both state and district rates in all three subjects; the clearest concern is science, where proficiency was 20 points below the state rate.

Compared with eight nearby K–5 schools in the district, Johnson’s ELA standing was in the middle (5th of 9), its math standing was lower-middle (6th of 9), and its science result was near the bottom (8th of 9). Math and science have lost ground relative to the state since 2022–23: Johnson’s math proficiency fell 8 points and its science rate rose just 2 points, while the state gaps widened to 16 and 20 points. ELA changed little, down 1 point. Chronic absenteeism remains high at 30% in 2025–26, compared with 18% statewide and 17% in the district, despite falling 28 points from 2021–22. SchoolDigger ranked Johnson 4,511th of 5,804 schools, in the 22nd percentile with 1 star; its student-teacher ratio was 23.5 in 2024–25, and 82% of students were free/reduced lunch eligible that year. One notable subgroup result is that SchoolDigger’s statewide effectiveness ranking for African American students was at the 62nd percentile, 40 points above Johnson’s overall percentile, though it declined from the 75th percentile in 2023–24.
