Summary

San Onofre Elementary in San Clemente serves 489 students from kindergarten through eighth grade and is part of the Fallbrook Union Elementary district. Its latest results show very strong achievement, particularly in English language arts (ELA) and math. The key takeaway is that high overall performance comes with two important cautions: science scores have fallen sharply from their recent peak, and eighth-grade results are weaker than the school’s elementary-grade results.

ELA and math are clear strengths compared with the state, district, and nearby schools: in 2025–26, proficiency was 79% in ELA and 76% in math, respectively 30 and 38 points above state rates and 18 and 26 points above district rates. The two nearby K–8 schools, Capistrano Home/Virtual and California Republic Leadership Academy Capistrano, averaged 70% in ELA and 57% in math; San Onofre was 9 and 19 points higher. Eighth grade is a softer spot: ELA proficiency was 64% and math 46%, 2 and 6 points below a nearby K–8 peer. Chronic absenteeism is comparatively low at 8%, versus 18% statewide and 15% in the district.

Results have risen over the longer term in ELA and math, up 12 and 14 points from 2022–23 to 2025–26, while science fell 20 points from its 2023–24 peak to 47%.
