Summary

San Juan Elementary serves 662 students in kindergarten through grade 5 in San Juan Capistrano and is part of Capistrano Unified. In 2025–26, proficiency in English language arts (ELA), math, and science was below both district and state averages. The most important concern is science: 17% of students were proficient, compared with 36% statewide and 59% districtwide.

Compared with seven nearby K–5 schools, San Juan ranked near the bottom in all three subjects: second-lowest in ELA and science, and third-lowest in math. Its proficiency was 35% in ELA, 34% in math, and 17% in science, versus nearby-school averages of 52%, 50%, and 38%. Math is the relative bright spot: its gap with the state was 4 points, smaller than the gaps in ELA (14 points) and science (19 points), though its result remained below the nearby-school average. Fourth grade was a stronger grade-level result: math proficiency was 40%, just 2 points below the state rate. A separate Spanish assessment also showed a positive result in listening: 25%, compared with 24% statewide and districtwide.

Results have improved in ELA and math since 2022–23, rising 10 and 5 points, respectively; science has declined 11 points over that period, despite a rebound in the latest year. Chronic absenteeism also fell, from 31% in 2021–22 to 14% in 2025–26, below the state’s 18%. SchoolDigger gave San Juan 2 stars and a 35th-percentile statewide ranking in 2025–26, compared with 4 stars and the 87th percentile for the district. Among nearby K–5 schools, San Juan had the largest enrollment and highest student-teacher ratio: 662 students and 26.4 students per teacher, versus a peer average ratio of 22.3. In 2024–25, 73% of students were free/reduced lunch eligible, compared with a 54% peer average.
