Summary

Del Obispo Elementary is a public K-5 school serving about 310 students in San Juan Capistrano, part of the Capistrano Unified School District, and it performs notably well for its student population despite facing some common challenges.

The school's most significant strength is its exceptional support for specific student groups; it ranks in the 93rd percentile for homeless students and the 77th percentile for both low-income and special education students, far exceeding the performance of other nearby schools with similar demographics like San Juan Elementary and Kinoshita Elementary. However, the school grapples with a chronic absenteeism rate of 20.7%, which is higher than the state average and notably higher than neighboring schools such as John Malcom Elementary (11.9%) and George White Elementary (11.1%). Academic performance varies considerably by grade, with 5th-grade English being a highlight but 4th-grade English and 5th-grade math showing room for growth.

When compared to other schools, Del Obispo spends more per student ($21,778) than most in its district and achieves a solid overall ranking, though it trails higher-performing schools like John Malcom Elementary. The school also shows a historical decline in its statewide ranking and a performance gap between female and male students. Addressing attendance and ensuring consistent teaching across all grades are key areas where improvement could help the school build upon its clear successes in supporting vulnerable learners.

Open Quote There is an excellent atmosphere of community and genuinely caring for the students' achievement. My daughter was fortunate enough to attend kindergarten here and her confidence shot up in a matter of weeks. They take children without the educational background and by the time they graduate they are miles from where they once were. Close Quote
