Summary

Sunkist Elementary serves 304 students in grades K–5 in La Puente, within Bassett Unified. Its latest results show lower proficiency than the district and state in all three core subjects: in 2025–2026, 29% of students were proficient in English language arts (ELA), 20% in math and 16% in science. The central concern is that these gaps span all three subjects, rather than being limited to one area.

Compared with nearby K–5 schools, Sunkist had the lowest ELA and math results and the second-lowest science result; its scores were also below the nearby-school averages of 38% in ELA, 32% in math and 25% in science. The 2025–2026 state results were 49%, 38% and 36%, while Bassett Unified results were 45%, 30% and 23%, respectively. Third-grade math is a notable exception: Sunkist reached 48%, above the state’s 47% and district’s 43%, while fourth- and fifth-grade math were 14% and 12%. There are also relative strengths beyond core-subject results: Spanish-assessment listening was 36%, compared with 24% statewide, and writing was 23%, compared with 17%. Chronic absenteeism was 15% in 2025–2026, below the district and state rates of 18%.

Results have not improved consistently over time. From 2022–2023 to 2025–2026, science proficiency fell from 25% to 16%, while ELA moved from 30% to 29% and math from 19% to 20%; the gap with state results widened in all three subjects. SchoolDigger placed Sunkist at the 17th percentile statewide with 1 star in 2025–2026, compared with the district’s 40th percentile and 2 stars. SchoolDigger’s ranking for how well the school serves English Language Learner students dropped from the 51st percentile in 2021–2022 to the 19th in 2023–2024; its ranking for homeless students fell from the 49th percentile in 2024–2025 to the 26th in 2025–2026. In 2024–2025, the student-teacher ratio was 21.7, and 93% of students were free/reduced lunch eligible—a high share among nearby schools. These measures describe school context, not the causes of its results.
