Summary

Ranchero Middle serves 1,140 students in grades 7–8 in Hesperia, within Hesperia Unified. The most important concern is that its 2025–26 proficiency rates were below California’s in all three subjects: 33% in English language arts (ELA), 18% in math and 20% in science, compared with 49%, 38% and 36% statewide.

Ranchero’s relative strengths are ELA and its 7th-grade results. It was 2 percentage points ahead of its district in ELA and 1 point behind in math; in science, it was slightly ahead, at 20.4% versus 20.1%. Among 11 nearby schools, Ranchero ranked third in both 7th-grade ELA, with 38% proficiency compared with a nearby-school average of 29%, and 7th-grade math, with 21% compared with 15%. Its 8th-grade results were less competitive: it ranked sixth in ELA and science and fifth in math. In the nearby comparison, Ranchero scored above both Hesperia Junior High and Cedar Middle in ELA and math, but its science result was below Cedar’s and above Hesperia Junior High’s.

Results have improved over time: from 2022–23 to 2025–26, proficiency rose 6 percentage points in ELA, 8 in math and 8 in science, while the gaps to state results narrowed in each subject. SchoolDigger placed Ranchero at the 24th statewide percentile and gave it 1 star in 2025–26, up from the 8th percentile in 2023–24. Chronic absenteeism remains a concern: 37% in 2025–26, compared with 18% statewide and 32% in the district. In 2024–25, the student-teacher ratio was 22.1:1, and 81% of students were free/reduced lunch eligible. SchoolDigger’s statewide measure of how well the school serves English Language Learner Students was at the 37th percentile in 2023–24, above Ranchero’s overall 8th percentile, but down from 66th the year before.
