Summary

Topaz Preparatory Academy is a public K-6 elementary school serving 722 students in the Hesperia Unified School District, operating in a community with significant economic need.

When compared to other schools in its district, Topaz stands out as a relatively strong performer. It ranks second highest among ten comparable Hesperia Unified elementary schools in English, math, and science proficiency, trailing only Mesquite Trails Elementary. A major strength is its remarkably low rate of chronic student absenteeism, at 20.2%, which is significantly better than both the district average and nearly all nearby schools like Hollyvale Elementary and Mesa Grande Elementary. The school has also shown particular effectiveness in supporting its English Language Learner students.

Despite these strengths, the school's overall academic performance has declined from higher historical levels and remains in the lower third of schools statewide. There is a notable performance gap with the top district school, Mesquite Trails Elementary, especially in math and science. The school also shows varying results across different grade levels and student groups. While it spends more per student than the charter school Pathways to College K8, its academic results are mixed in comparison, highlighting ongoing challenges in translating resources and strong attendance into top-tier academic outcomes.

Open Quote The last year or so this school has really gone down hill. Test scores are getting lower, enrollment has increased and the staff seem to be stressed, hurried and rude almost all the time. Even the PTC president acts like she cannot be bothered with other parents, I have had several encounters with her and she is a horrible representative of the school. I would say they have the worst office staff if it weren't for Mrs. Diana she is absolutely an amazing lady and what you'd like to see walking into an elementary school. The other office staff such as Kathy are unfriendly and condescending, and I have heard this from most other parents I know with children attending school here. I wanted my child to attend a school that I believed in unfortunately this is not the same school it was when she started. We will be looking into other options at the end of this school year.
