Summary:

Plumas Unified has eight schools, from elementary through high school: four elementary schools, three regular high schools and one continuation high school. In 2025–2026, the seven schools with reported scores averaged 40% in ELA, 28% in mathematics and 25% in science, compared with 49%, 38% and 36% statewide. The averages improved from the prior year, but the most important finding is that they remain below state results in all three subjects.

Results vary considerably by school and subject. Quincy Elementary led in ELA at 47% and science at 37%; Chester Elementary led in mathematics at 40%, about 2 points above the state. At the other end, C. Roy Carmichael Elementary had the lowest ELA result at 30%, Quincy Junior/Senior High the lowest mathematics result at 15%, and Chester Elementary the lowest science result at 19%. One notable grade-level strength is Chester Junior/Senior High in grade 11: 77% were proficient in ELA and 38% in mathematics, versus 57% and 32% statewide. It also reported a 100% graduation rate and 0% dropout rate, compared with 88% and 8% statewide.

Group averages rose year over year by 3 points in ELA, 6 in mathematics and 5 in science, though not every school improved in every subject. For example, Quincy Elementary gained in all three, while ELA fell at Chester and Greenville elementary schools. SchoolDigger ranks Chester Junior/Senior High highest among these schools at the 71st percentile with 4 stars, and C. Roy Carmichael lowest at the 20th percentile with 1 star. Other context measures differ too: in 2024–2025, regular high-school student-teacher ratios ranged from 10.1 at Chester Junior/Senior High to 15.4 at Quincy Junior/Senior High; the 2024–2025 low-income measure, free/reduced lunch eligible, ranged from 37% to 71% across schools. Beckwourth (Jim) High’s test-score values are state-suppressed, so it is not included in score comparisons.
